How it works

Remember the Domain is a free domain search. You type a name, and your browser checks it in many extensions at once. You need no account, there is no limit of ours, and no server of ours between you and the answers.

Where the answers come from

  1. Public DNS. Your browser asks a public DNS service (DNS over HTTPS) if the name has nameservers. A name with nameservers is registered. By default the names are spread over Cloudflare and Google; in Settings you can pick DNS.SB, AliDNS or your own service.
  2. The registry. When DNS has no nameservers, your browser asks the registry of that extension over RDAP, the registries' public lookup service that replaces WHOIS. If the registry has no record of the name, it is free.

The list of extensions comes from the IANA root zone, the ICANN list of generic extensions and the Public Suffix List. It is updated every week.

Gentle on the services we ask

  • Each DNS service gets at most 4 questions at a time from your page. One that fails rests for a minute.
  • Each registry server gets one question at a time, with a short gap. One server often serves hundreds of extensions, and registries block an address for up to a day when it asks too much. So the page asks each registry server about at most 25 names per 10 minutes on its own; for more, open a name and click "Confirm with the registry". A registry server that fails 3 times in a row is left alone for 5 minutes.
  • "Check all extensions" asks about 1,700 names, so it takes a few minutes. The page shows the progress and tells you when all are ready. A browser notification is sent only if you ask for one.

What the results mean

ResultMeaning
FreeNot in DNS, and the registry says it has no record of the name.
Probably freeNot in DNS, but the registry could not confirm it: it has no RDAP service (many country code extensions, for example .de), or it did not answer.
TakenRegistered. Open "Details" to see the dates and the registrar from the registry.
ClosedNot open to the public: brand extensions like .google or .sbi, and restricted ones like .gov or .gov.in. Also Too short when the name is shorter than the extension allows (.in needs 3 characters).
ReservedNot in DNS, and the registry's answer says the name can not be registered, for example bakery.site, which the .site registry keeps for itself. Details shows the registry's own words.

What it can not tell you

  • Prices and premium names. Some registries say in their RDAP answer that a name is reserved or premium, and the page shows that; most say nothing. A registrar shows the real price.
  • Names for sale. A taken name can be for sale by its owner. We do not check marketplaces.
  • The moment you buy. A free name can be registered by someone else a minute later.
  • Local rules. Some country code extensions need a local address or a company in that country.

So treat every result as a best guess, and confirm with a registrar before you buy.

Registering a name

For a free name, "Register at Dynadot" opens Dynadot's search with that name. We are joining Dynadot's referral program: once that starts, a purchase through this link may earn us a commission. The price is the same for you. Any registrar that sells the extension works just as well.

Privacy

  • We never see the names you type. They go from your browser to the DNS services you picked (Cloudflare and Google by default) and to the registries, under those services' own privacy terms.
  • To put your country's extensions first, the page asks our own server once per browser session which country your IP address is in. We look it up in our own copy of the MaxMind GeoLite2 database and keep nothing. You can pick a country in Settings instead.
  • No analytics. One cookie, rtd_mode, remembers whether you use the classic page or dev mode; nothing else is in it. Your browser also keeps your light or dark choice, your settings, your saved lists and recent results; without an account they never leave it.
  • An account is optional. You sign in with a Bitgeek account (auth.dot.com.in), which we use only for your email address. Signed in, your saved lists (the names you starred, their last result and when they were checked) are kept on our server so that you see them on your other devices; the lists you made in this browser before signing in are added to your account. Two cookies keep you signed in: rtd_s (the session, which the page can not read) and rtd_in (says that you are signed in). Your searches still go from your browser to DNS and the registries, never through us. Signing out removes the lists from this browser; "Delete account" on the Saved page deletes the account and every list in it.
  • When a registry or DNS fails, your browser sends us a short report so that we can see which registries break: the extension, the RDAP server, the error and the time. Like any web request, it also carries your IP address and browser name. It never contains the name you searched.
  • If you sign up for the monitoring launch or the newsletter, your email address is kept by our list service, lists.dot.com.in, only for that. We send a confirmation email first, and every email has a one-click unsubscribe.
  • "Result looks wrong? Tell us" sends the same kind of report: the extension and the result shown, not the name.

API and MCP server

The same checks are open to programs, from our server (the search on this page still runs in your browser). Without a key: 20 names a day per IP address. With a free account: 100 a day; Pro: 5,000 (see Plans). Create a key in Settings > Account and send it as Authorization: Bearer rtd_….

  • MCP server at https://rememberthedomain.com/mcp (Streamable HTTP, JSON responses). Tools: search_domain, check_domains, extension_info, list_extensions, watch_domain, unwatch_domain, list_watches, get_usage. For Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http rememberthedomain https://rememberthedomain.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer rtd_…"
  • GET /api/v1/search?name=sunrise%20bakery&country=IN: a name across the popular extensions, the country's own and domain hacks (about 40 checks).
  • POST /api/v1/check with {"domains": ["sunrisebakery.in"]}: up to 50 exact names. Add "fresh": true to skip our cache (taken names are kept a day, free ones an hour).
  • GET /api/v1/extensions, GET /api/v1/extensions/co.in: the root zone data (not counted).
  • GET|POST /api/v1/watches, DELETE /api/v1/watches/<name>: your watchlist. GET /api/v1/usage: what you used today.

Answers have status (free, maybe, taken, reserved, closed, err), a reason in words, and for taken names the registrar and dates when the registry publishes them. Our server asks each registry slowly (one question at a time, a budget per 10 minutes), so a burst of names can come back as maybe with "unconfirmed": true: ask again later.

Who runs it
